The Indian Traditional Mint Sauce or Pudina Chutney is a spicy green sauce made with star ingredients, cilantro, and mint. Apart from these ingredients, ginger, garlic, green chilies, and other spices are used to make this sauce hot.
The word “Chutney” is derived from the Hindi word “Chaatna,” which means “to lick.” Spiced Chutneys date back to 500 BC, in India. Chutney is commonly referred to as fresh and pickled preparations. Another word, “Achaar,” refers to pickles containing oil.
Different kinds of chutneys are famous across different regions. Pudina Chutney is popular in Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Other variations include Coconut Chutney, Mango Chutney, Tomato Chutney, Papaya Chutney, Green Chili Chutney, etc.
These are used as a side dish. Pudina Chutney is served along with snacks, sandwiches, curries, and rice dishes. The sauce is also known as green chutney for its lush green color.
