Everything We Know About ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Season 2 (2024)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Mr. & Mrs. Smith season one.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the steamy spy thriller starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, became something of a pop-culture phenomenon when it originally premiered in 2005. Nearly 20 years later, a TV reboot of the same name was announced but this time with Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (Pen15) at the helm. The Amazon Prime Video series hit the streamer in February 2024, with Glover acting as the co-creator and executive producer alongside showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane.

While the critically acclaimed remake is poised for Emmy glory, the project did run into a few hiccups ahead of its debut. Before Erskine was cast, British actress and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge was actually supposed to appear opposite Glover. The Fleabag creator was slated to star as the female lead and co-write the Prime Video adaptation but exited the project in September 2021 citing creative differences. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, she said: “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it—still care about it. And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision.”

In season one, Glover and Erskine played the part of a married assassin couple living together under the alias of John and Jane Smith. The show starts out with the spies being recruited by an intelligence agency, Hihi, which ultimately pairs the two together and relocates them to a brownstone in New York City. Unlike the Doug Liman-directed action movie, they’re working for the same team, and we learn there are more John and Jane Smiths out there just like them carrying out high-risk missions in glamorous, far-flung locations across the globe.

After an explosive first season cliffhanger, fans are eager to gather every detail about Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two, including whether Glover and Erskine will return and what the premise could be moving forward. Here’s everything we know so far.

Will There Be a Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2?

Yes, Amazon has officially renewed Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a second season. The news came in May 2024, three months after season one had aired. The streamer made the announcement during its first upfront presentation in New York.

“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series,Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a press statement. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 Release Date

Amazon has not set a release date for season two, and it’s unknown whether the series has started filming. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly that was published in May, Sloane revealed that they “didn’t even get to start writing [season 2] yet” so it might be a minute until the show is back on the air.

When the first installment premiered, all eight episodes dropped on the same day. If the co-creators are aiming for the same timeline, that would mean season two could potentially debut as soon as February of next year.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return?

At the same time the series was renewed, sources told Variety that Glover and Erskine were not expected to return as the stars of season two. If you watched the finale, you know why. The series concluded with a violent shootout between Glover and Erskine versus the other John and Jane Smith, played by Wagner Moura and Parker Posey (The White Lotus). However, Glover and Sloane have bothspoken out against the previous reporting.

“Who says we’re not in it? Maybe we are. Maybe we aren’t,” Glover teased during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! You can watch the full late-night interview here.

Similarly, Slone addressed the rumors regarding the lead actor’s return. “I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?'” Sloane told EW. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world—we haven’t said anything—but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline? Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.”

What Will Happen in Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2?

Details about a season two storyline are scant—as in non-existent. We can assume that like the first season, the forthcoming installment will center around the Smiths, just maybe not with the same faces that fans expect. But who knows, anything is possible.

In its eight-episode first season, the action-comedy followed Glover and Erskine’s John and Jane as they embarked on nail-biting missions that took them from a ski resort in Italy to a cottage in Lake Como. Naturally, the lines between personal and professional got progressively blurry as the pair develops a romantic connection. Things take a turn for the worst when first, the couple fails three missions (which isn’t allowed), and second, decides to split up (also not allowed). The other John and Jane (Moura and Posey) are then sent to eliminate Glover and Erskine but by the end, viewers aren’t sure who—if anyone—made it out alive.

Sloane told EW that she has ideas cooking up for future seasons, and the narrative has plenty of room for expansion. “I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” she said. “And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”

In a March 2024 interview withVanity Fair, Erskine remained tight-lipped about whether she’d be reprising her role, however, she admitted to having insider info about where season two is headed. “I can’t say anything. I know things. I know where it goes, but it would be such a disservice. Oh God, I hate holding things, and I want to tell you everything that I can. I really want to, but just know, I think it’s very exciting where it will lead.”

Speaking to Deadline, Erskinealso revealed she’d like to see how John and Jane’s relationship evolves and what other challenges could arise if the couple’s story isn’t in fact over. “Do they have kids? Do they not have kids? Do those issues come up? If it is a new couple, and we are not in it, I would want to see just a different kind ofMr. & Mrs. Smithagain, just have it completely different and explore a whole new set of relationships,” she added. “That would be exciting.” Exciting, indeed.
