I give no stars! Terrible work...especially avoid the men nail techs. I went for the first time today. I was assigned a male. He was heavy handed, unskilled. I had to try to coach him. I was stuck due to my schedule. Poor workmanship, poor gel polish application. I made him do so many corrections. He got an attitude! Didn't want to put oil on my cuticles. I will not go back!

I spent a significant amount of time on google and yelp searching for a salon while I am out of town, and I BELIEVED I had found a contender. I called to make an appt with the tech that has the best reviews online, then headed to the salon. I am going to mention the positives first, then get into the areas of opportunity. I want to highlight that the salon is esthetically pleasing despite the outside appearance. I was greeted and introduced to Trish, who I requested to apply Dip Powder to my nails. I can see why she came highly recommended. She was very gentle with the hand drill, not to cause any damage to my nail bed, which was important to me. She needed to correct my polish, which she spent extra time trying to do to. I appreciated her service. If I was getting another type of nail service (acrylic, gel, etc), I would definitely choose her again. I was provided with a warm handoff to the tech who was going to complete my pedicure. I don't remember his name, but he was very meticulous and gentle, complete with a mini massage. He provided the best pedicure I'v had. Regarding the pricing, I wanted to note the paying $80 for two services is astonishing for me, considering what I would have paid if I had been at home. Now, onto the "areas of opportunity". In my opinion, everything that I observed can be EASILY remedied. I want to note the there was a review from another customer who stated that this location did not have a high standard of cleanliness, and she was correct. Upon sitting down, I noticed the overfull trashcans and littered nail tips and such scattered on the floor. While sitting, the nail tech adjacent to Trish's station proceeded to clip her finger and toe nails with a clipper she pulled from her station, projecting her nail clippings all over the floor. She then placed the clippers back in the drawer- NO SANITIZATION. I am glad I had already cut my nails prior to my appointment. The nail station was very cluttered with previous customer bottles, dust and used nail files. It was weird to me that there wasn't a cloth or paper towel in sight. I glanced over at the lash and brown area, and it was just as unsanitary cluttered with used wax sticks, tweezers and supplies. When I was taken over to the pedicure area, my nails weren't dry so they smudged. Trish tried her best to repair them, but was unsuccessful. If I hadn't been there for over an hour just for my nails, I would have asked for her to fix them. The nail tech who did my pedicure, spoke to me once, and that was to ask if I wanted a cut-down. He never spoke again. Not sure if it was a language barrier, but I didn't really mind. Again, the tools he used were not sanitized. There were dirty spots and a red stain on the towel that was used, and when I asked the tech about it he said " oh, it's only nail polish". They did have a stack of towels in the rear of the salon, so I wasn't sure why he just didn't retrieve another one and trash the one he was using. I did notice the sterilizing machines, but clearly were not used by the nail techs I had. Additionally, I saw that there was a complementary water service provided by the salon, however I was never asked if I wanted one. They were being consumed by the techs, and the empty bottles were randomly left around the salon, not placed in the trash. All in all, I would not return. I do hope that they can resolve the biggest complaints- cluttered, unclean and non-sterilized areas and tools. Maybe a visit from the Health Inspector would be a step in the right direction. The search continues.

FAQs

What percent should you tip a nail lady? ›

Much like at restaurants and hair salons, the industry standard for tipping at the nail salon ranges around 15 to 20 percent, and it is generally recommended that if you've received extra services or specialty designs, a minimum of 20 percent is appreciated.

What are tips at a nail salon? ›

As with many service industries, it's recommended to tip about 15 to 20% of the total bill.

Are salon manicures worth it? ›

Maintain Healthy Nails

Regular manicures will keep your nails clean and strong, preventing breakage. As a bonus, many salons also offer treatments like a paraffin dip or nail hardening to make nails even stronger.

What to expect when you go to a nail salon? ›

At the salon, the manicure service usually starts with the removal of the existing nail polish. Then, your nails will be cleaned, shaped, filed; and your cuticle are pushed down (unless you request not to). The goal is to make your fingernails look clean, attractive and well-kept.

Is a $5 tip good for nails? ›

Other tipping considerations at a nail salon

Try not to tip less than $5. If you're only getting a nail polish color swap for $20, consider rounding up the tip to $5. If you're using a coupon, discount voucher or gift card, base your tip on the normal price for the service.

Is $5 a good tip for a pedicure? ›

If you got great service, a $10 tip would be nice. A minimum of 20% would be decent for any type of salon service. Keep in mind that tips make up a large percentage of their income - especially if it isn't the owner performing the service. A $5 tip would be kind of low for a pedicure.

Is it rude not to tip a nail salon? ›

It is generally considered bad etiquette to not tip at a nail salon. Tipping is a way to show appreciation for the service provided by the nail technician. Not tipping can be seen as disrespectful and may also affect the technician's income, as they often rely on tips to supplement their wages.

How much should I pay for my nails? ›

Understanding Nail Service Costs

On average, a basic manicure at a salon can range from $20 to $50, with a national average of around $45. However, when opting for more specialized services like gel polish or French tip nails, the prices can escalate.

How much do you tip for a $35.00 pedicure? ›

On average, you should tip between 15% and 20% for a pedicure.

What is the healthiest thing to get at a nail salon? ›

Overall, Dip Powder Manicures are a great way to get a healthy manicure that will protect and strengthen your nails without causing any damage. Just like any nail treatment, you do have to make sure you properly remove it to keep your nails safe and healthy – Don't pick at your manicure!

What is the healthiest way to get your nails done at a salon? ›

Choose soak-off gel nails instead of acrylic nails.

While gel nails can cause nail brittleness, peeling, and cracking, they're more flexible than acrylic nails. This means your own nails are less likely to crack. You'll want to ask for gel nails that soak off rather than ones that must be filed off.

How to save money on nails? ›

The biggest savings of all is cutting out the salon altogether and doing your nails at home. "Once you overcome the initial expense of a nail clipper, file, cuticle pusher, cuticle oil and your favorite nail polish, you'll really save," says Choi.

What are fake nails called in a salon? ›

The term "acrylic nail" usually refers to liquid and powder mixes, which are combined in front of you into a blob of dough, shaped onto your nail with a brush, and then air dried.

Should I cut my toenails before a pedicure? ›

First off, don't trim your toenails beforehand. Your pedicurist will take care of this for you. Choose your nail polish color ahead of time. This will save time and keep your pedicurist on schedule.
